Job Hunting

20 February 2010 | By onthemoney in The Economy | No Comments Yet

OK, I know that you have been looking for a job for  months. You have received unsolicited advice from relatives and friends. Yet most  adults don’t need to be taught, just reminded to do what we know we know we should be doing.

Be sure to highlight your skill set rather than your old job title.  A job resembling your old position may no longer be available. You, however, possess a unique set of skills that you can carry to your new position.

Here’s an example:  Years ago I hired a former freight and traffic manager  as a service  manager in my financial services firm. In her old position she had to keep track of two hundred sixteen-wheelers, and make sure that every truck arrived at its destination with the proper load, and on time. Even though she had no financial service experience, I knew she would be an asset to our team. But she was shocked when I offered her the position over younger candidates.

What does a  trucking traffic manager have in common  with a service manager for my company?

One aspect of our business has to do with the movement of money:  transfers from client funds in and out of their checking accounts; movement from one’s  old employer sponsored  retirement plan to a new IRA; transfers of funds between brokerage and mutual fund accounts and similar transactions.   As you can guess, it is imperative that transactions be handled in an accurate and timely way.   I knew her training and ability to juggle many items at once, as well as the fine work ethic I sensed she had, would make for a good manager, moving money as efficiently as she moved a fleet of trucks.

What are your special skills?  Make sure you stress what you can do rather than only what you have done.

Snow .  A good part of our country has been covered with record snow. An if the ol’ groundhog is right, winter is far from over. If you’re thinking of fleeing the cold and the snow for a warmer climate, here are some tips to keep your home and valuables safe while your enjoying fun in the sun.

  1. Don’t keep your lights on. Nothing like lights on all day long to signal that no one is around. Use inexepensive weekly timers to vary the times when lights are lit.
  2. Do install timed and bright exterior lighting.
  3. Do be sure that you have engaged a trusted friend or service to keep your walks clean and your driveway clear.
  4. Don’t post the name of your alarm company on warning stickers, Seasoned thieves can often circumvent an alarm when they know the servicing company.
  5. Do have your newpaper and mail picked up by a trusted neighbor.
  6. Don’t post your plans or whereabouts on social networking sites.
  7. Do hide your valuables in uncommon places such as a childs room or sack of dog food.
  8. Don’t boast about your stuff.
  9. Do keep your radio on and tuned to Talk Radio.
  10. Don’t allow shrubs or other plantings to obstruct your windows or entryways.
  11. Do install high quality deadbolts, locks, and doors.
